Should you Purchase Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?

There are two major versions of Minecraft one of which is exclusively available for computers, the other can be played on almost every device. Minecraft: Java Edition is the original game. It is perfect for installing mods and playing on massive multiplayer servers. Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, in the meantime, is ideal for playing with players on different systems.

When you start digging into Minecraft there are a lot of choices: where to go for, what to build and which game mode you want to play.

Before you can build a world, there is one major choice to make: which Minecraft version should you play?

Although the gameplay fundamentally of Minecraft is identical, the two editions of Minecraft that are available - the Java and the Bedrock have some major differences.
Minecraft servers

Here are the main differences between Java and Bedrock Minecraft versions. Also, a short summary of which version to purchase.

Minecraft: Java Edition vs Minecraft: Bedrock Edition

Java Edition is only available to PC, Mac, or Linux

First, if you're planning to play Minecraft on any other device other than a computer, then you'll be playing Bedrock. There's no other choice because the Java version is only available on computers.

Bedrock isn’t available on Mac and Linux. This means that if you're playing on one of these systems, Java is your only option.

Bedrock Edition allows you to play with your friends on other consoles

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is the best choice if you would like to play Minecraft with other players. The Bedrock version has cross-play, meaning you can play with a person even if you're on PC and they're playing on the Nintendo Switch, for example.

The Java version lets you only play with other Java users. Of course, this means that if all of your friends are playing Java then it's the right one for you too.

Java Edition has massive multiplayer servers

Although it's not able to offer the same level of cross-playas other games, Java has large multiplayer servers. These servers let you play with other Java users, and offer stunning maps with minigames, activities and games.

Both versions of the game run their own servers. However, Java servers have been around for a long time, meaning that there's no shortage of cool maps to choose from.

Java is the best option for those who are looking to play minigames such as Bed Wars and Hunger Games on YouTube.

Bedrock Edition has most consistent performance

Although it might seem like an easy game, Minecraft can be incredibly demanding on your computer's graphic card and CPU. Bedrock is a good option if you don't have a top-of-the-line computer.

The Java edition allows you to modify your graphics. However the Bedrock edition is more fluid and more stable. This means that there are fewer frames dropping and quicker load times.

Java Edition has a nearly limitless number of mods

One huge difference between Java and Bedrock is the capability to add mods, which are only available to Java players.

Mods are software pieces you can add to Minecraft to modify the game almost any way you like. There are basic mods that alter the graphics or the music, and more advanced mods that introduce new items or change how the world functions.

The best part is that nearly all of these mods are free. And there's even a dedicated program called Minecraft Forge that will let you install and modify them quickly.

While Bedrock does have some modding tools, they're expensive and limited in quantity compared to Java's unlimited possibilities.

Java Edition allows you to play in Hardcore mode

By default, Minecraft has four game modes: Survival, Creative, Adventure and Spectator. Java users have access to Hardcore which is a fifth game mode.

Hardcore mode is very popular among streamers. It gives you only one life. This means that if die, there's no respawning in a bed. Your world is forever erased.

Java is the best choice if you are looking for an adventure.

As noted above, if you're playing on anything other than a PC you're not allowed to make an option.

If you are playing on PC, is highly recommended. You'll get the same great gameplay, but also thousands of mods to improve your experience, as well as a massive community of players. It's the original way to play Minecraft, and still the most enjoyable.
